Massive Crowds Expected for Sheeran’s Hamburg Concerts

One of the biggest pop music events of the year has arrived in Hamburg, as British superstar Ed Sheeran brings his Mathematics Tour to the city. Performing three consecutive sold-out shows at the iconic Volksparkstadion, Sheeran is set to entertain an estimated 180,000 fans over the weekend.

The enormous turnout is already making its mark on local traffic, particularly as around 40 percent of ticket holders are travelling over 100 kilometres to attend, according to organisers FKP Scorpio. The first concert kicks off today, Friday 4 July, and our team is reporting live from the scene.

Gates Open Right on Time

Security staff were in position as scheduled, and precisely at 4pm, the stadium gates opened, allowing fans to stream inside. Many are still arriving from the nearby Volkspark, with the atmosphere buzzing and the weather playing along favourably. All signs suggest the concert will begin on time, much to the delight of the crowd.

Eager to secure the best spots, the first attendees dashed to the front. The mood remains festive and peaceful. A full concert review will be published on abendblatt.de after the performance.

A Family Day Out for Sheeran Fans

Among the crowd was a family from East Frisia spanning three generations. Grandmother Heide was gifted the concert trip for her 66th birthday and brought along daughters Linda and Karen, son Michel, and granddaughter Lea—who was born to the soundtrack of Sheeran’s “Castle on the Hill.”

While others queued in the sun, the family opted for a more relaxed experience, enjoying homemade meatballs in the shade of the VIP car park. The concert had clearly become more than just an event – it was a family celebration.

Travelling from Taiwan for a Moment with Sheeran

Ed Sheeran’s global appeal was evident in the presence of Arthur and Tess, fans originally from Taiwan. Arthur, currently studying in Amsterdam, travelled to Hamburg specifically for the show. Coincidentally, Tess is attending a language school in the city to learn German, making the visit a perfect opportunity for both a concert and a reunion. The couple met while studying at Beijing University in China, and like many others in attendance, Arthur hopes to hear his favourite Sheeran song “Photograph” performed live.

Security Staff Steal the Spotlight

Sheeran’s tour has already made waves in other cities, with packed shows and spontaneous performances – including a viral moment in Stuttgart. During one of his appearances at the MHP Arena, a video emerged of a security guard visibly moved by the song “I See Fire,” originally featured in the Hobbit film adaptation. The burly guard, sporting a ponytail, headband, and full beard, was seen swaying to the music and singing along passionately – much to the internet’s delight.

The clip, shared on TikTok, has already surpassed 100,000 views. Concertgoers praised the attentiveness of the security team, particularly in the intense 32°C heat. “I wouldn’t have made it through the heat if he hadn’t kept asking us if we needed water,” wrote the user who posted the video. “The whole security crew was outstanding.”

Organisers Praise Security Team’s Dedication

The security firm responsible for staffing the concerts also expressed their gratitude. “A huge thank you to all our staff who gave their all during two incredible days with Ed Sheeran. We are incredibly proud of our team,” the company posted on social media.

As Hamburg plays host to thousands of music lovers from across the globe, Ed Sheeran’s visit is proving to be more than just a concert series – it’s becoming a memorable experience for fans and staff alike.
